Description

Born from a sleepless night of grief and love, “Why Why Why” is the cry of a lone mountain horse searching for her family, her Country, and her place in a changing world.

Beneath the brumby’s voice lies a deeper question that echoes through all beings: What did I do wrong? Why am I so alone?

This is a lament for the wild horses of the Snowy Mountains and for every soul who understands being misunderstood, loneliness, grief, unwanted and the pain of being judged without being known.

Lyrics:

Why why why?

The land has gone so quiet now
No birds sing in the dawn
The creek still winds through ancient stone
But everyone is gone

I walk the ridge where I was born
And call into the sky
But only echoes answer me
And I don’t know why

There’s sorrow in the snow tonight
There’s fear beneath the trees
The mountain holds its breath for us
And trembles in the breeze

Why, why, why
Why am I so alone?
Why, why, why
In the only Country I have known?
What did I do wrong?
Can somebody tell me why?
I was only living free
Beneath the mountain sky
Why, why, why
Do the gentle always cry?

They speak of me in hard words now
As if I have no name
As if my heart is not a heart
As if I feel no pain
But I have loved our Country well
The grasses, rain and stone
I carried life across these hills
And never walked alone

My mother’s breath is in this wind
My father’s in this ground
The bloodline of the mountain horse
Still echoes all around

Why, why, why
Why am I so alone?
Why, why, why
In the only Country I have known?
What did I do wrong?
Can somebody tell me why?
I was only living free
Beneath the mountain sky
Why, why, why
Do the gentle always cry?
Bridge

I remember my mother’s shadow
Moving softly through the snow
I remember running beside her
Where the mountain rivers flow
Now I call into the silence
And only echoes reply
The wind knows where they’ve gone
But she won’t tell me why

The valley wears a heavy grief
The stars seem far away
Every sound upon the mountain
Makes me fear another day

I never wanted anything
But to stay where I belong
I only knew the ancient pathways
The rivers and the songs
And if you walked these mountains with me
You might understand
The love a heart can carry
For both family and land

Why, why, why
Why am I so alone?
Why, why, why
In the only Country I have known?
What did I do wrong?
Can somebody tell me why?
I was only living free
Beneath the mountain sky
Why, why, why
Do the gentle always cry?

Country, keep my family near
Hold them safely in your light
If they wander through the darkness
Guide them gently through the night
And if one heart still remembers
If one voice still sings our song
Then perhaps we’re not forgotten
And perhaps we still belong…
