Conservation, Kinship, Compassion

About Rewilding Australia

Conservation in Australia is at a crossroads. For too long, we have relied on outdated, violent strategies to control nature, labelling species like wild horses as pests while ignoring their profound ecological and spiritual contributions. Rewilding Australia calls for a bold reimagining of conservation — one guided by compassion, harmony, and the spirit of the horse. By embracing the natural balance that wild horses bring to our landscapes, we can lead Australia out of the dark ages of destruction and into a future where all beings thrive together.

The myth that brumbies irreparably damage Australia’s thin soils does not hold up to scrutiny. Wild horses have naturally concave hooves that distribute their weight more gently than the hard, cloven hooves of cattle and sheep. Australia supports over 24 million cattle and 67 million sheep, yet it is the brumbies — fewer than 20,000 across the country — that are unjustly blamed for environmental harm. Studies increasingly show that wild horses play a vital role in seed dispersal, soil aeration, and reducing fire risks, making them essential stewards of the land they call home.

At Rewilding Australia, we embrace the opportunities that horses, as an herbivore that slots into the ecological niche of the megafauna, plays in healing the land and bringing harmony.
